World Book Day, marked on 23 April, is UNESCO's annual celebration of books and reading, observed in more than a hundred countries by readers, schools, libraries and publishers.

History

World Book Day traces its roots to Catalonia, where 23 April has long been kept as the feast of Sant Jordi, a spring day on which sweethearts exchanged roses. In the 1920s the Valencian writer Vicente Clavel Andrés proposed dedicating a day to books in honour of Miguel de Cervantes. Spain adopted a national Día del Libro, first celebrated on 7 October 1926 and then moved in 1930 to 23 April, the date of the novelist's death. Booksellers soon began pairing a book with every rose, weaving reading into the region's springtime romance. The observance took on a global character in 1995, when the General Conference of UNESCO, meeting in Paris, proclaimed 23 April as World Book and Copyright Day. Delegates were drawn to the date for its remarkable literary resonance: it is linked to the deaths of Cervantes, William Shakespeare and the Peruvian chronicler Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, among other writers. The word "copyright" was chosen deliberately, to underscore the importance of protecting and rewarding the labour of authors. From 2001 the celebration gained a new dimension when UNESCO began naming an annual World Book Capital, starting with Madrid, to honour cities with ambitious plans for promoting reading. Over the following decades the day spread to more than a hundred countries, shaped each year by campaigns, reading themes and classroom activities. Some nations added their own customs: the United Kingdom and Ireland, for example, moved their popular children's version to the first Thursday of March, complete with costumes and book tokens for young readers.
