World Water Day traces its origins to the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development, the landmark Earth Summit held in Rio de Janeiro. Delegates drafting Agenda 21, the summit's blueprint for sustainable development, proposed that one day each year be set aside to celebrate freshwater. Later that December, the UN General Assembly adopted the recommendation and designated 22 March as World Day for Water, with the first observance following on 22 March 1993. From modest beginnings the day steadily gained structure and reach. UN-Water, the body that coordinates the United Nations' freshwater efforts, took charge of the observance and introduced a fresh theme each year, allowing every edition to spotlight a particular concern — from groundwater and wastewater to the simple call to value water.
