History

The roots of World Environment Day reach back to June 1972, when delegates from around the globe gathered in Stockholm for the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment, the first major international meeting to treat the health of the planet as a shared concern. To keep that momentum alive, the United Nations General Assembly designated June 5 — the day the conference opened — as an annual occasion for reflection and action. The same gathering led to the creation of the UN Environment Programme, which would go on to steward the observance. The first World Environment Day was held in 1974 under the gentle yet enduring slogan "Only One Earth", a phrase that still captures its spirit. In its early years the day was largely educational, but in 1987 organisers introduced the idea of rotating the celebrations among different host countries, giving each an opportunity to showcase local efforts and welcome a global audience. Successive themes have spotlighted forests, oceans, deserts, cities and wildlife, turning a single date into a rolling conversation about the natural world. Over the decades the observance has widened from government ceremonies into a genuinely popular movement. Campaigns such as "Beat Plastic Pollution", hosted by India in 2018, and the launch of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration in 2021 have drawn schools, businesses, artists and ordinary citizens into tree plantings, clean-ups and online pledges. Today it is marked in more than 150 countries, and its reach through social media has made June 5 one of the most widely recognised environmental dates on the calendar.
