History

Earth Day was born from a moment of mounting alarm about the state of the American environment. Its chief architect, U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin, had watched industrial smog, polluted rivers and vanishing wildlife go largely unchallenged, and a massive oil spill off Santa Barbara, California, in early 1969 hardened his resolve. Borrowing the energy of the era's campus teach-ins, he proposed a national day of environmental learning. With young activist Denis Hayes as national coordinator, the first Earth Day unfolded on April 22, 1970, drawing an estimated 20 million Americans into streets, parks and lecture halls. The response proved seismic. Within months the movement helped spur the creation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and a wave of landmark laws, among them the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act and the Endangered Species Act. For two decades Earth Day remained largely an American affair, but in 1990 Hayes led an effort to take it worldwide. That year some 200 million people in more than 140 countries took part, lifting environmental questions onto the global stage and giving momentum to recycling programmes and the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. Earth Day has continued to evolve with the concerns of each generation. The 2000 edition harnessed the young internet to link activists across continents, while attention increasingly turned to clean energy and climate change. On April 22, 2016, the landmark Paris climate agreement was opened for signature on Earth Day itself. The 50th anniversary in 2020 moved largely online during the pandemic, and today the observance is coordinated by EarthDay.org across more than 190 countries, reaching over a billion people through annual themes and year-round campaigns.
