Pongal is a four-day Tamil harvest festival held each January, when Tamil communities in Tamil Nadu, across India and around the world give thanks to the sun for a bountiful crop. The countdown above targets Thai Pongal, the main day โ the sun's entry into Makara that opens the Tamil month of Thai โ which falls on 14 or 15 January depending on the exact moment of the transit. The festival opens with Bhogi on the day before, and continues with Mattu Pongal and Kaanum Pongal on the two days after.
