History

Makar Sankranti is one of the few major Hindu festivals set by the solar calendar rather than the lunar one, which is why it always falls in mid-January rather than moving through the seasons. It marks the moment the sun enters the sidereal sign of Capricorn (Makara) and begins its northward journey (Uttarayana), heralding longer days and the end of the harshest winter. The date is not fixed, though: it is pinned to an astronomical transit measured against the fixed stars, and because that frame drifts against the Gregorian calendar by roughly one day every seventy years, the festival now falls on 14 or 15 January depending on the year — and will fall later still over the coming centuries. If the transit occurs after sunset, the observance moves to the next day. Its observance stretches back many centuries and is tied to the rhythms of the agricultural year. Across India and neighbouring regions the festival takes on a wonderful variety of local forms and names — Pongal in the south, Lohri in the north on the eve, Uttarayan in Gujarat with its famous kite festival, Magh Bihu in Assam, and Maghi in Punjab. Common threads run through them all: gratitude for the harvest, ritual bathing in sacred rivers, bonfires, and the sharing of sweets made from sesame and jaggery.
