Epiphany, observed on 6 January, is a Christian feast celebrating the manifestation of Jesus Christ — remembered in the West as the visit of the Magi, or Three Kings, and in the East, as Theophany, as his baptism.

History

Epiphany is among the oldest festivals of the Christian year, kept from at least the third and fourth centuries in the Eastern churches, where it appeared before the December celebration of the Nativity had become widespread. Early communities gathered on 6 January to honour the manifestation of Jesus Christ, and the writer Clement of Alexandria, working around the year 200, records that some already marked it. In its earliest form the feast often joined the birth and the baptism of Jesus in a single commemoration of his appearing. As the observance spread, its focus divided along regional lines. In the Western churches Epiphany came to centre on the visit of the Magi — the wise men, later remembered as three kings, who followed a star to the infant Jesus — seen as the moment his coming was revealed beyond his birthplace. In the Eastern churches the day, known as Theophany, kept its emphasis on the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan. The name itself comes from the Greek epiphaneia, meaning 'manifestation' or 'appearing,' and both understand the feast as a showing-forth of the divine. Through the medieval and early modern periods, Epiphany gathered many customs. It closed the Twelve Days of Christmas, and its eve became known as Twelfth Night. Homes were blessed and their doorways chalked, while Eastern communities developed the Great Blessing of Waters. Churches following the older Julian calendar observe the day on what is 19 January by the modern Gregorian reckoning. Sweet ring-shaped cakes with a hidden token, and processions of the three kings, took firm root in many countries.

Meaning

At its heart Epiphany celebrates manifestation — the belief that in Jesus the divine was made visible in the world. In the Western tradition the journey of the Magi expresses that Christ was revealed to peoples beyond his birthplace, while in the East the baptism in the Jordan is seen as the moment the nature of God was shown forth. The feast also marks a threshold in the calendar, drawing the Christmas season to its close. In many cultures it is a day of gift-giving, when children receive presents said to come from the three kings, and of gathering around a shared cake. Whether it is kept through liturgy, procession, or a simple family table, Epiphany joins celebration with quiet reflection.
