History

Australia Day traces its calendar date to 26 January 1788, when Captain Arthur Phillip and the ships of the First Fleet arrived at Sydney Cove and raised the flag to establish the settlement that would grow into the city of Sydney. Through the nineteenth century the anniversary was observed unevenly across the separate British colonies, often under names such as "First Landing Day" or "Foundation Day," and it was celebrated most enthusiastically in New South Wales, where regattas on Sydney Harbour became an early fixture. The move toward a shared, nationwide observance gathered pace after the federation of the colonies into the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. In 1935 the name "Australia Day" was adopted by all states and territories for the 26 January commemoration, though for many years it was marked on the nearest Monday to create a long weekend rather than on the fixed date itself. The sesquicentenary in 1938 and the bicentenary in 1988 were both occasions of especially large public celebration, helping to cement the day in the national calendar. Since 1994 all states and territories have consistently celebrated Australia Day as a public holiday on 26 January itself. Over recent decades the day has increasingly been framed as an inclusive celebration of the nation's people, landscape and achievements. Citizenship ceremonies welcoming new Australians have become a signature feature, alongside the announcement of the Australian of the Year awards, community breakfasts, air and sea displays, and evening fireworks that draw families to parks, beaches and foreshores across the country.
