International Workers' Day 2027 Countdown

International Workers' Day, observed on May 1 and widely known as Labour Day or May Day, is a public holiday in many countries that honours working people and the labour movement. It commemorates the 1886 campaign for an eight-hour working day in the United States and is marked with union marches and rallies as well as springtime festivities.

History

The first of May has been a day of celebration for far longer than it has been a workers' holiday. Across much of Europe it began as May Day, an ancient spring festival marking the return of warmth and growth, celebrated with flowers, maypoles and village fairs. This seasonal joy formed the backdrop against which a second, more modern meaning of the date would take shape in the nineteenth century. During the 1880s, as industry reshaped daily life, labour movements in the United States and Europe campaigned for an eight-hour working day. American unions called a general strike for May 1, 1886, and in Chicago a rally at Haymarket Square on May 4 ended in bloodshed when a bomb was thrown at police, who then opened fire; seven officers and at least four civilians died. Eight anarchists were convicted of conspiracy, four of them hanged in November 1887; the surviving prisoners were pardoned in 1893 by Illinois governor John Peter Altgeld, who criticised the trial. In 1889 the founding congress of the Second International in Paris called for an international demonstration on May 1, 1890, in memory of the Chicago strike and in support of the eight-hour day, and in 1891 it made the day an annual event. Through the twentieth century the observance spread across every continent. In the Soviet Union and other socialist states it became one of the most important dates of the year, marked by mass parades, while the United States and Canada kept a separate Labor Day on the first Monday of September, a September holiday American unions had celebrated since 1882 and which became a US federal holiday in 1894. In 1955 the Catholic Church placed the feast of St Joseph the Worker on May 1. Today more than eighty countries mark May 1, or a day close to it, as a public holiday. It is known by many names — Labour Day, May Day or International Workers' Day — and in numerous places it blends with the older springtime festivities that share the date.

Meaning

At its heart, International Workers' Day is a moment to acknowledge the dignity of work and the people who do it. It invites reflection on how the effort of countless individuals — in fields, factories, offices, homes and services of every kind — sustains communities and makes daily life possible. For trade unions and workers' organisations it is also the main day of the year for marches, rallies and speeches pressing demands on pay, hours, safety and rights, a tradition that reaches back to the eight-hour-day campaign of the 1880s. For many, it is also simply a welcome day of rest. Falling in the fresh warmth of spring across the northern hemisphere, May 1 is an occasion to step away from routine, gather with family and friends, and enjoy the outdoors. In this way the holiday balances quiet appreciation for work with the pleasure of pausing from it.
