International Workers' Day, observed on May 1 and widely known as Labour Day, is a public holiday in many countries that honours the contributions of working people and the value of everyday work.

History

The first of May has been a day of celebration for far longer than it has been a workers' holiday. Across much of Europe it began as May Day, an ancient spring festival marking the return of warmth and growth, celebrated with flowers, maypoles and village fairs. This seasonal joy formed the backdrop against which a second, more modern meaning of the date would take shape in the nineteenth century. During the 1880s, as industry reshaped daily life, the idea of setting aside a day to recognise the working day and the people who filled it gained wide support. In 1889 an international gathering in Paris chose May 1 as an annual occasion to honour workers, and the date was first marked in many countries in 1890. Over the following decades governments across the world adopted it as an official public holiday, giving formal recognition to the contributions of labour to society and the economy. Through the twentieth century the observance spread across every continent, and today more than eighty countries mark May 1, or a day close to it, as a public holiday. It is known by many names — Labour Day, May Day or International Workers' Day — and in numerous places it blends seamlessly with the older springtime festivities that share the date. The result is a holiday that unites appreciation for work with the simple pleasures of a spring day off.

Meaning

At its heart, International Workers' Day is a moment to acknowledge the dignity of work and the people who do it.
