The International Day of Peace, observed each year on 21 September, is a United Nations observance devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace and inviting people everywhere to a shared moment of reflection and goodwill.

History

The International Day of Peace was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1981 through resolution 36/67, which set aside a day devoted to commemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace among all peoples and nations. The observance was first held the following year, in 1982. For its first two decades it was kept on the third Tuesday of September, a date that coincided with the opening of the General Assembly's regular annual session in New York. In 2001 the General Assembly adopted resolution 55/282, which fixed a single, permanent date for the observance. From 2002 onward, the International Day of Peace has been marked each year on 21 September. The resolution declared that the day be observed as a day of global ceasefire and non-violence, inviting all nations and people to honour a cessation of hostilities for its duration. It also set the day aside as a period devoted to reflection, education and goodwill, inviting people everywhere to pause and consider the ideals of harmony and understanding that the observance represents. A number of enduring customs have come to shape the day. Each year the United Nations announces a theme to guide events, and at its New York headquarters the Secretary-General rings the Peace Bell, a gift presented in 1954 and cast from coins and medals donated by people from dozens of countries. At noon a minute of silence is widely observed. Over the decades the observance has spread far beyond the United Nations, taken up by schools, libraries, community groups and cultural organisations around the world, each marking the day in its own way.
