Mother's Day honours mothers and mother figures. In the United States and many other countries it falls on the second Sunday of May, though dates vary around the world — the United Kingdom, for example, celebrates Mothering Sunday three weeks before Easter.

History

Long before the modern holiday, spring festivals honouring motherhood appeared across the ancient Mediterranean. The Greeks held rites for Rhea, mother of the gods, and the Romans celebrated Cybele during the springtime festival of Hilaria. In medieval Europe a Christian observance known as Mothering Sunday took root by at least the 16th century, falling on the fourth Sunday of Lent, when worshippers returned to their "mother church" and, in doing so, often reunited with their own families. The holiday familiar today was shaped in the United States by Anna Jarvis. After the death of her mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis, she organised a memorial service in Grafton, West Virginia, in May 1908 and campaigned tirelessly for a national day of recognition. Her efforts succeeded in 1914, when President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day. Jarvis chose the white carnation as its emblem, yet she later grew dismayed as the occasion became heavily commercialised. From there the celebration spread rapidly, carried by migration, print culture and, eventually, global commerce. Dozens of countries adopted their own versions through the 20th century, though the timing diverges: the United Kingdom retained Mothering Sunday in Lent, many nations kept the second Sunday of May, and much of the Arab world settled on 21 March, near the spring equinox. Today Mother's Day ranks among the most widely observed family celebrations on earth.

At its heart, Mother's Day is a moment set aside to acknowledge the care, sacrifice and everyday devotion of mothers and mother figures. For many families it offers a rare pause in busy routines, a chance to express gratitude that often goes unspoken the rest of the year, whether through a handwritten note, a bouquet, a shared meal or simply time spent together. The day also carries a quiet emotional depth. It can be tender for those who have lost their mothers, and meaningful for grandmothers, stepmothers, adoptive and foster mothers, and anyone who has offered maternal love. Across cultures the customs differ, but the sentiment is remarkably consistent: recognising the people who nurtured us and celebrating the bonds that shape a lifetime.
