History

World Health Day grew directly out of the founding of the World Health Organization. In the years when nations were seeking new ways to cooperate on shared challenges, delegates drafted a constitution for a specialised United Nations agency devoted wholly to public health. That constitution came into force on 7 April 1948, formally bringing the World Health Organization into existence and giving the date a lasting significance that the annual observance would later carry. At its very first session in 1948, the newly formed World Health Assembly — the decision-making body of the organization — resolved to set aside one day each year to focus attention on health. The first World Health Day was observed in 1950, and 7 April was chosen to commemorate the anniversary of the organization's founding. From the outset the intention was simple: to raise awareness of a particular health theme and to encourage people everywhere to take an interest in their own wellbeing and that of their communities. In the decades since, the observance has settled into a familiar rhythm, with a fresh theme selected each year to spotlight a pressing area of health. Past editions have turned attention to topics such as maternal and child health, mental wellbeing, food safety and access to care. Campaigns unfold through public events, media features and educational activities coordinated with health ministries and partner organisations. What began as a single resolution has become one of the most widely recognised health dates on the international calendar, marked in countries across every region.
