World Children's Day on November 20 is a global day promoting the wellbeing, rights and voices of children everywhere.

History

World Children's Day grew out of a United Nations General Assembly resolution of 1954 recommending that every country institute a Universal Children's Day, set aside to encourage understanding among children and to advance their welfare. The date carries particular weight: on November 20, 1959 the Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child, and on the same date in 1989 it adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child. The idea was older — the League of Nations had endorsed a Geneva Declaration of the Rights of the Child in 1924 — but the 1989 Convention was the first legally binding international treaty devoted to children. The Convention's 54 articles cover a child's right to survival, education, protection from violence and exploitation, and a say in decisions that affect them. It has been ratified by 196 states, more than any other human rights treaty — every member of the United Nations except the United States, which signed it in 1995 but has not ratified it. A committee of independent experts in Geneva reviews each country's record under the treaty at regular intervals. UNICEF, which promotes the day worldwide, has run it since 2017 as World Children's Day — 'a day for children, by children' — built around a 'Kids Takeover', inviting young people into visible roles in media, politics, business and sport for the day. Landmarks and buildings around the world are lit in blue, UNICEF's colour, and schools hold lessons and activities on children's rights. Many countries keep their own children's days on other dates — June 1 across much of Eastern Europe and East Asia, May 5 in Japan, where it is a public holiday, November 14 in India, April 23 in Turkey and April 30 in Mexico — so the November observance sits alongside a patchwork of national traditions.

At heart, World Children's Day is a reminder that every child deserves care, safety, learning and the chance to grow up with dignity. It celebrates childhood itself — curiosity, play and imagination — while inviting adults to listen to young people and act in their interest. The day is also a moment of shared hope. By turning attention to the youngest members of every community, it affirms a simple, universal wish: that the next generation inherit a kinder and more caring world.
