World Children's Day was established by the United Nations in 1954 as Universal Children's Day, set aside to encourage understanding among children and to advance their welfare around the world. The date of November 20 carries particular weight: it marks the day in 1959 when the UN adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child, and the day in 1989 when it adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child, now one of the most widely embraced international agreements. Over the decades the day has grown from a formal observance into a lively global celebration led by schools, families and children's organisations. Landmarks are lit in blue, classrooms hold special activities, and young people are invited to speak on the issues that matter to them.
