History

Human Rights Day marks the anniversary of one of the twentieth century's landmark documents. On December 10, 1948, meeting at the Palais de Chaillot in Paris, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by 48 votes to none, with eight abstentions. The text had been drafted over two years by the UN Commission on Human Rights, chaired by Eleanor Roosevelt, with a drafting committee that included René Cassin of France, Charles Malik of Lebanon and Peng Chun Chang of China; it was the first statement of fundamental rights to be agreed on a global scale. The United Nations formally began observing December 10 as Human Rights Day in 1950, inviting states and organisations to mark the occasion. Since then the Declaration has been translated into more than 500 languages — more than any other document — and the day has become an annual moment to reflect on how far the ideals it expresses have travelled. Each year the UN human rights office sets a theme, and every five years the UN Prize in the Field of Human Rights is presented on the day. By coincidence, December 10 is also the anniversary of Alfred Nobel's death, which is why the Nobel Peace Prize is presented in Oslo on the same date. The Declaration's thirty articles have gone on to shape national constitutions, courts and laws around the world, and together with the two covenants that followed it in 1966 they are known as the International Bill of Human Rights. Anniversaries have drawn particular attention: the fiftieth in 1998 and the seventy-fifth in 2023 were each marked by year-long United Nations campaigns. The day is observed in schools, universities, museums and civic institutions, where it is used above all as an occasion for learning about the document itself. Some countries also keep a national human rights day of their own: South Africa's falls on March 21, the anniversary of the 1960 Sharpeville shootings.

Meaning

Human Rights Day celebrates a shared idea: that dignity, fairness and freedom belong to everyone, everywhere, simply by virtue of being human. It is a day for education and reflection — an occasion to learn about the Declaration and the values it holds up. For many, the day is also a quiet affirmation of common ground. Across cultures and beliefs, the wish for people to be treated with respect and fairness is remarkably widespread, and the observance gives that wish a shared date on the calendar.
