Vasant Panchami (Saraswati Puja) Countdown

Vasant Panchami, kept on the fifth day of the bright half of the Hindu month of Magha, welcomes the first stirrings of spring and honours Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge, music and the arts, in a festival awash with yellow flowers, yellow clothes and yellow sweets.

History

Vasant Panchami is rooted in the Hindu lunisolar calendar, which divides the year into six ritu, or seasons. The fifth day (panchami) of the waxing moon of Magha was reckoned the threshold of vasanta — spring — the season when mustard fields across northern India turn gold and the cold of Magha begins to loosen its grip. Ancient and classical Sanskrit literature celebrates vasanta as the king of seasons, and courtly poets from Kalidasa onward set songs, swings and flower festivals in its opening days, suggesting that a spring festival on this date is many centuries old. Over time the day became inseparable from Saraswati, the goddess of learning, speech, music and the arts, who in Puranic tradition is said to have appeared on this very tithi. Worship of Saraswati on the panchami is attested in medieval devotional texts and flourished especially in Bengal, Odisha and Mithila, where the festival is known simply as Saraswati Puja. Households, schools and universities install her image, place books, pens and musical instruments before her, and suspend study for the day so that knowledge itself may rest and be blessed. A parallel and equally old custom makes Vasant Panchami the traditional day of aksharabhyasa or vidyarambham in many regions — a child's ceremonial first writing, tracing the first letters in rice grains or on a slate under the goddess's gaze. In Punjab and much of the north the day doubles as Basant, a festival of kite-flying whose yellow-decked skies were described by travellers centuries ago. Today the festival is celebrated across India, Nepal and the wider diaspora, its blend of seasonal joy and reverence for learning intact.

Meaning

Vasant Panchami carries a double meaning that few festivals match: it is at once a seasonal celebration and a feast of the mind. As the herald of spring, it marks renewal — the mustard blossom's yellow becomes the festival's colour, worn on clothing, offered in marigolds and echoed in saffron rice and sweets, a visual promise that warmth and growth are returning. As Saraswati Puja, the day exalts knowledge as sacred. Students place their books at the goddess's feet, musicians offer their instruments, and children write their first letters, expressing the conviction that learning, speech and art are divine gifts to be received with humility. In honouring both the earth's awakening and the awakening of the mind, Vasant Panchami links outer and inner springtime.
