Holi, the festival of colours, welcomes spring with joyous crowds throwing coloured powders, water games, music and sweets — one of India's most exuberant celebrations, now joined around the world.

History

Holi counts among the oldest festivals of the Indian subcontinent, with roots reaching deep into antiquity. Verses describing spring revels with coloured play appear in early Sanskrit literature, and the festival is woven from several beloved legends. The most widely told recalls the young devotee Prahlad, whose faith carried him unharmed through a fire meant to destroy him, while the demoness Holika perished — the origin of the eve's bonfires. In the Braj region, Holi is inseparable from the playful love of Radha and Krishna. References to Holi grow richer through the centuries. The seventh-century Sanskrit play Ratnavali, attributed to Emperor Harsha, describes the festival's splashing colours and water. Medieval temple carvings and the devotional poetry of the bhakti movement dwell on Krishna drenching the gopis in hue, and Mughal-era miniature paintings from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries depict court and countryside alike joining the revelry. By the nineteenth century, travellers and chroniclers recorded elaborate town celebrations, confirming Holi as a festival that crossed lines of rank and region. Over time distinct regional forms took shape. In Barsana, women playfully drive off men with sticks in the famed Lathmar Holi, while Mathura and Vrindavan celebrate for more than a week. In Bengal, the poet Rabindranath Tagore recast the day as Basanta Utsav, a graceful spring festival of song and dance at Santiniketan. Indentured labourers and later emigrants carried Holi across oceans — as Phagwah in the Caribbean, and to Fiji, Mauritius, South Africa and beyond. In recent decades, colour-throwing gatherings inspired by Holi have spread to cities worldwide.

Meaning

For those who celebrate, Holi marks the joyful arrival of spring after winter — a moment of renewal when fields bloom and the year feels young again. It carries a deeper message too: the triumph of good over evil and of devotion over pride, remembered in the bonfires of Holika Dahan. The colours themselves speak of abundance, warmth and the shared happiness of a community welcoming the new season together. Holi is also cherished as a great social leveller. On this one day, differences of age, status and background dissolve in clouds of colour; elders and children, neighbours and strangers greet one another as equals. Old quarrels are set aside, embraces exchanged, and sweets shared freely. In this spirit of forgiveness, laughter and open-hearted play, many find the truest meaning of the festival.
