Star Wars Day grew from a joke into a worldwide fixture of pop-culture calendars. The pun itself is nearly as old as the saga: on May 4, 1979 — two years after George Lucas's original film opened in 1977 — a London newspaper advertisement congratulated Britain's newly elected prime minister with the line "May the Fourth Be With You, Maggie," the earliest widely cited use of the wordplay. For decades afterwards the phrase circulated informally among fans, traded in schoolyards, conventions and early internet forums each spring. The date crystallised into an organised celebration in the internet era. On May 4, 2011, the Toronto Underground Cinema in Canada hosted what is generally regarded as the first large organised Star Wars Day event, complete with film screenings, a costume contest and trivia competitions. Social media amplified the idea at light speed: within a few years, #MayThe4thBeWithYou and #StarWarsDay were trending annually as fans posted memes, artwork and tributes. After The Walt Disney Company acquired Lucasfilm in 2012, the holiday gained semi-official standing. Disney and Lucasfilm began embracing May 4 with themed events at Disney parks, merchandise releases, game promotions and streaming premieres timed to the date, while LEGO, publishers and retailers joined in with annual launches. In 2019, the California State Assembly adopted a resolution recognising May 4 as Star Wars Day, honouring the saga's California roots. Fans have even extended the fun into "Revenge of the Fifth" on May 5, a Sith-themed encore riffing on Revenge of the Sith.
