Academy Awards (Oscars) 2027 Countdown

The Academy Awards, universally known as the Oscars, are the film industry's most prestigious honours, presented each year in Los Angeles to celebrate the finest achievements in cinema. The televised ceremony draws viewers around the world for its red carpet, speeches and golden statuettes. The next ceremony, the 99th Academy Awards, is scheduled for March 14, 2027 at the Dolby Theatre.

History

The Academy Awards were conceived in the late 1920s by the newly formed Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, an organisation founded in 1927 to advance the young film industry. The first ceremony took place on 16 May 1929 at a private dinner in the Blossom Room of the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, lasted only about fifteen minutes, and honoured films released in 1927 and 1928. Tickets cost five dollars, the winners had been announced months in advance, and roughly 270 people attended what would grow into the world's most famous awards night. The ceremony expanded rapidly in scale and reach. Radio carried the results from 1930, and in 1953 the Oscars were televised for the first time, turning a Hollywood dinner into a national broadcast. The gold-plated statuette, officially named the Academy Award of Merit, acquired its enduring nickname 'Oscar' in the early 1930s, a name the Academy formally adopted in 1939. Over the decades the show moved between grand Los Angeles venues and, since 2002, has been staged chiefly at the Dolby Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard. As cinema became a global art form, so did the Oscars. Voting is carried out by the Academy's thousands of members across the craft branches — actors, directors, writers, editors, cinematographers and more — and the membership has broadened over time to include film professionals from many countries. Milestones such as the 2020 Best Picture win for a non-English-language film underscored the ceremony's widening international scope. Today the Academy Awards are broadcast to audiences in well over a hundred countries, and the annual question of who will take home a statuette remains one of the entertainment calendar's most anticipated moments. The 98th ceremony on 15 March 2026 saw One Battle After Another win Best Picture. The 99th and 100th ceremonies (14 March 2027 and 5 March 2028) are the last scheduled for the Dolby Theatre: in March 2026 the Academy and AEG announced that from the 101st ceremony in 2029 — also the first year of the Academy's broadcast deal with YouTube — the Oscars move to the Peacock Theater at L.A. LIVE in downtown Los Angeles.

Meaning

The Academy Awards celebrate cinema as both an art and a craft, honouring the collective work of directors, performers, writers, composers, designers and technicians whose contributions shape a film. For those who work in the industry, an Oscar represents the recognition of peers and a lasting mark of achievement; for audiences, the ceremony is a yearly celebration of the stories and images that have moved them. Beyond the awards themselves, Oscar night has become a shared cultural event. Millions gather for watch parties, follow the red carpet and debate the nominees, turning the evening into a global conversation about film. The golden statuette has grown into one of the most recognisable symbols of excellence anywhere, and the ceremony endures as a celebration of creativity, collaboration and the enduring power of the movies to bring people together.
