The gold-plated statuette, officially named the Academy Award of Merit, acquired its enduring nickname 'Oscar' in the early 1930s, a name the Academy formally adopted in 1939. Over the decades the show moved between grand Los Angeles venues and, since 2002, has been staged chiefly at the Dolby Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard. As cinema became a global art form, so did the Oscars. Voting is carried out by the Academy's thousands of members across the craft branches — actors, directors, writers, editors, cinematographers and more — and the membership has broadened over time to include film professionals from many countries.
