How the United Kingdom celebrates
March 17 is marked across the United Kingdom with parades, Irish music sessions and church services, but its legal status differs by nation. In Northern Ireland it is a bank holiday: Belfast holds a city parade and a free family festival village around Cathedral Gardens and St Anne's Square, Downpatrick โ traditionally held to be St Patrick's burial place โ stages a parade through the town, and Armagh runs its multi-day Home of St Patrick Festival. When 17 March falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the Northern Ireland bank holiday moves to the following Monday. In England, Scotland and Wales it is not a bank holiday and 17 March is an ordinary working day, so celebrations are cultural rather than statutory and often shift to the nearest weekend โ the Mayor of London's St Patrick's Festival parades from Green Park through Piccadilly and Whitehall to Trafalgar Square on the Sunday closest to the date.
