Christmas Eve on December 24 is the culmination of Advent and, in many cultures, the emotional heart of Christmas — the night of the main family meal, midnight mass and the arrival of gift-bringers.

History

Christmas Eve owes its prominence to an ancient way of keeping time. In the Christian liturgical tradition, a feast begins not at midnight but at the preceding sunset, so the celebration of Christ's birth naturally opened on the evening of December 24. The date of Christmas itself was fixed to December 25 in Rome by the fourth century — the Chronograph of 354 records it — and the vigil kept on the night before soon acquired its own solemn character as the threshold of the Nativity. Over the medieval centuries the evening gathered distinctive customs. Roman practice developed a sequence of three Christmas Masses — at midnight, at dawn and during the day — and the midnight service became the emotional core of the night. In 1223 Francis of Assisi is said to have arranged a living nativity scene at Greccio in Italy, popularizing the crèche that still centres many homes and churches. Carols, candlelit processions and the blessing of the household carried the observance across Europe. The Christmas Eve familiar today took shape largely in the nineteenth century. In German-speaking lands the decorated tree was lit on the evening of the 24th, and in 1818 the carol "Silent Night" was first sung in the village church of Oberndorf, Austria. European settlers and missionaries carried the vigil worldwide, giving rise to the Noche Buena supper across Latin America and the Philippines. Today, whether marked by midnight mass or the arrival of gift-bringers after dark, the eve remains for many the true beginning of Christmas.

For Christians, Christmas Eve is a night of watchful anticipation — the vigil in which the long weeks of Advent give way to the joy of the Nativity. Gathering by candlelight, singing carols and attending the midnight service, believers mark the moment when, in their faith, hope enters the world in the form of a child. Beyond its religious meaning, the evening has become one of the most cherished family occasions of the year. It is the night of the great shared meal, of stories and stillness before the morning's excitement, and for children the almost unbearable wait for gifts. Across many cultures the eve carries a particular tenderness: the sense of light kindled against the darkest weeks of winter, of doors opened to relatives and neighbours, and of a year drawing gently toward its close.
