History

The impulse to mark the turning of the year is ancient, but New Year's Eve as the night of December 31 is a product of the Roman calendar. When Julius Caesar reformed the Roman system in 46 BCE, he fixed January 1 as the year's opening — a date sacred to Janus, the two-faced deity of doorways who gazed at once toward the past and the future. Through much of medieval Europe, however, the year was counted from other dates such as March 25 or Christmas, and December 31 held no special status of its own. That changed with the Gregorian reform of 1582, when Pope Gregory XIII restored January 1 as the standard beginning of the year; over the following centuries most of the world adopted the calendar for civil use. Distinct evening customs took root alongside it. Scotland developed Hogmanay, with its bonfires and the visiting ritual of first-footing, while many churches held candle-lit watchnight services to see the old year out in prayer. The night's most familiar spectacles are surprisingly modern. New York's Times Square ball first descended in 1907, and Robert Burns's poem "Auld Lang Syne" became the anthem of midnight farewells. In the twentieth century, radio and then television knit these local rituals into a single global occasion, so that fireworks over Sydney Harbour, London and Rio de Janeiro now unfold in a rolling wave. Because midnight arrives zone by zone, the celebration sweeps around the planet across roughly a full day.
