History

Rugby union spread around the world through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, yet for decades its national teams met only in regional championships and touring matches. The idea of a true world tournament was debated for years before the sport's governing body finally approved one in 1985. The inaugural Rugby World Cup was co-hosted by New Zealand and Australia in 1987, with sixteen invited teams taking part. The champions received the Webb Ellis Cup, a gilded trophy named after William Webb Ellis, the schoolboy who, in rugby folklore, first picked up the ball and ran with it at Rugby School in 1823. The tournament grew quickly. A worldwide qualifying system arrived in 1991, opening the door to emerging rugby nations, and the 1995 edition in South Africa became a landmark moment as the sport turned professional soon afterwards. Successive tournaments travelled across Britain, Ireland and France, Australia and New Zealand, before Japan staged a joyously received first Asian edition in 2019. France 2023 drew record global audiences and confirmed the World Cup as one of the largest events in international sport. The 2027 tournament returns to Australia — a co-host in 1987 and sole host in 2003 — and marks a new era: the field expands from twenty to twenty-four teams, playing across six weeks from the opening match on October 1 to the final at Stadium Australia in Sydney on November 13. Four years later, the 2031 edition takes the Webb Ellis Cup to the United States for the first time, part of a long-term effort to carry rugby to new audiences across the Americas.

The Rugby World Cup is the great quadrennial gathering of the worldwide rugby family. Once every four years, supporters from dozens of nations converge on the host country or crowd into pubs, clubhouses and living rooms at home, and the sport's most cherished values — respect, camaraderie and fair play — are on full display.
