The UEFA European Championship — the Euros — is the premier international football tournament for European nations, held every four years. The next edition, UEFA EURO 2028, is co-hosted by the United Kingdom and Ireland and scheduled for June 9 – July 9, 2028.

History

The European Championship began as the vision of Henri Delaunay, a French football administrator who championed the idea of a continental tournament as early as the 1920s. His plan only took shape after his death: the first edition, then called the European Nations' Cup, was played in France in 1960 with just four teams reaching the finals. The trophy lifted that summer still carries his name today. Through the following decades the competition grew steadily. It was renamed the UEFA European Championship in 1968, expanded to eight finalists in 1980, and reached sixteen teams in 1996, when England hosted a tournament remembered for its festival atmosphere. In 2016 the field widened again to twenty-four nations, opening the finals to smaller footballing countries and producing fairytale runs — none more celebrated than Portugal's first title that year and Greece's surprise triumph in 2004. The Euros have since become one of the most watched events on the sporting calendar, drawing television audiences in the hundreds of millions every four years. Euro 2020, played in 2021 across eleven cities scattered around the continent, marked an unusual pan-European edition, while Spain's victory at Euro 2024 in Germany made them the tournament's most decorated nation with four titles. Euro 2028, co-hosted by the United Kingdom and Ireland from 9 June to 9 July 2028, opens at the National Stadium of Wales in Cardiff and ends with the final at Wembley Stadium in London, with further venues in Glasgow, Dublin, Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham and Newcastle; Italy and Turkey follow as co-hosts in 2032.

Meaning

For one month every four years, the Euros transform the continent into a shared summer of football. Whole nations rearrange their evenings around kick-off times, town squares fill with supporters, and flags appear in windows and on cars from the smallest villages to the largest capitals. For many fans it is a rare stretch when an entire country seems to move to the same rhythm. The tournament is also a celebration of belonging and friendly rivalry. Supporters travel across borders in team colours, mingle with rivals in fan zones, and find common ground in a shared love of the game. Smaller nations savour the chance to test themselves against traditional giants, and an unexpected run can lift the mood of a whole country.
