The European Championship began as the vision of Henri Delaunay, a French football administrator who championed the idea of a continental tournament as early as the 1920s. The trophy lifted that summer still carries his name today. Through the following decades the competition grew steadily. In 2016 the field widened again to twenty-four nations, opening the finals to smaller footballing countries and producing fairytale runs — none more celebrated than Portugal's first title that year and Greece's surprise triumph in 2004. The Euros have since become one of the most watched events on the sporting calendar, drawing television audiences in the hundreds of millions every four years. Euro 2020, played in 2021 across eleven cities scattered around the continent, marked an unusual pan-European edition, while Spain's victory at Euro 2024 in Germany made them the tournament's most decorated nation with four titles. Euro 2028, co-hosted by the United Kingdom and Ireland, will carry the competition to a new generation of supporters.

For one month every four years, the Euros transform the continent into a shared summer of football.
