In 496 CE, Pope Gelasius I established a feast day for Saint Valentine, fixing the date on the Western calendar. Reliable biographical detail is scarce, and over the centuries devotion blended with legend — most famously the story of a priest who quietly married young couples, and of a captive who signed a final message with affection. The day's romantic meaning developed far later. Around 1382, the English poet Geoffrey Chaucer connected mid-February to the season when birds choose their mates in his poem "Parliament of Fowls," helping tie the date to courtship. Through the following centuries, lovers in England and France exchanged handwritten verses and small tokens, and by the 1700s sending a "valentine" note had become a recognized seasonal custom. The nineteenth century reshaped the celebration into its modern form. Commercially printed cards appeared in Britain around the 1840s, and in the United States Esther Howland popularized ornate lace-and-ribbon valentines during the 1850s. The twentieth century layered on flowers, chocolates, and shared meals, while the day traveled worldwide — taking on distinctive local forms, such as reciprocal gift-giving in Japan and celebrations of both love and friendship across parts of Latin America.
