Father's Day grew from the same wave of family-centred celebration that produced Mother's Day in the early twentieth century. One of the earliest known observances was a church service held in Fairmont, West Virginia, in July 1908, organised by Grace Golden Clayton to honour local fathers. The idea found its lasting champion two years later in Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington, who wanted a day to recognise her own father, a widower who had raised six children on his own. The first Spokane celebration took place on June 19, 1910. Official recognition came slowly. President Woodrow Wilson marked the occasion in 1916, and President Calvin Coolidge encouraged states to observe it in 1924, yet for decades it remained an informal tradition kept alive by families and shopkeepers. Momentum finally built in the 1960s: President Lyndon B. Johnson issued a proclamation in 1966 setting the celebration on the third Sunday of June, and in 1972 President Richard Nixon signed the day into law as a permanent national observance in the United States. From its American roots the celebration travelled widely, though the calendar varies from place to place. The United Kingdom, Canada, Japan, India and many other countries share the third-Sunday-of-June date, while Australia and New Zealand mark it on the first Sunday of September. Several nations with long Catholic traditions, such as Spain, Italy and Portugal, keep Father's Day on March 19, the feast of Saint Joseph. Everywhere, the essential idea has proved remarkably portable: a fixed moment each year to thank fathers and father figures.
