The International Day of Happiness on March 20 is a United Nations observance that celebrates happiness and well-being as universal goals, inviting people everywhere to do something that brings joy to themselves and others.
History
The International Day of Happiness was established by the United Nations General Assembly in resolution 66/281, adopted by consensus on 28 June 2012, and it was observed for the first time on 20 March 2013. The resolution recognised happiness and well-being as universal goals and aspirations, and acknowledged that economic growth alone does not capture everything that makes life worthwhile. It called for a more inclusive, equitable and balanced approach to development โ one that promotes the happiness and well-being of all peoples. The idea drew inspiration from the Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan, which since the 1970s has famously measured national progress through the lens of Gross National Happiness rather than gross domestic product alone. In April 2012, Bhutan hosted a high-level UN meeting on happiness and well-being that helped build momentum for the observance, and the campaign to create the day was spearheaded by UN adviser Jayme Illien. Around the same time, the first World Happiness Report was published in 2012, ranking countries by life satisfaction and turning well-being research into headline news each spring. The date of March 20 falls on or beside the equinox, a moment of balance shared by every part of the planet โ a fitting symbol for a day that belongs to everyone. The observance quickly caught the public imagination: in 2014 the United Nations Foundation partnered with singer Pharrell Williams, whose hit song "Happy" became an unofficial anthem, and each year a fresh theme guides campaigns run by schools, workplaces, charities and the annual release of the World Happiness Report.
Meaning
The International Day of Happiness carries a simple but far-reaching message: happiness is not a luxury or an afterthought, but a fundamental human goal that societies should take seriously. By putting well-being alongside traditional measures of progress, the day encourages governments, communities and individuals to think about what genuinely makes life better โ health, relationships, kindness, security and purpose. On a personal level, the day is an open invitation to act: to thank someone, reconnect with a friend, perform a small act of kindness or simply notice the good in an ordinary day. Falling at the March equinox, when day and night are in balance across the whole planet, it is a reminder that the wish for a happier life is something every culture and every person shares.
