Feast of St. Nicholas Countdown

The Feast of St. Nicholas on December 6 honours the fourth-century bishop of Myra famed for secret generosity, and across Europe it is the night children set out shoes and boots to be filled with sweets and small gifts by Sinterklaas or Nikolaus.

History

Nicholas served as bishop of Myra, a port town in Lycia on the coast of Asia Minor, in the early fourth century, and tradition holds that he died on December 6 around the year 343. Little about his life is documented, but stories of his kindness travelled far: the most beloved tells how he secretly threw three bags of gold through the window of a poor man's house at night, providing dowries for three daughters — some versions say the gold landed in stockings or shoes left drying by the fire. He became one of Christendom's most popular saints, honoured as a protector of children, sailors, merchants and travellers, and in 1087 sailors carried his relics from Myra to Bari in southern Italy, where the great Basilica di San Nicola still houses them. Through the medieval centuries his feast day, December 6, spread across Europe together with customs of nighttime gift-giving in his name. By the late Middle Ages children in the Low Countries, the German lands and beyond were leaving out shoes to be filled with fruit, nuts and coins, and figures dressed as the bishop — with mitre, staff and flowing robes — visited homes, schools and market squares to ask whether children had been good. The tradition proved remarkably durable and travelled well. In the Netherlands and Belgium, Sinterklaas arrives by steamboat weeks in advance and the great gift evening, pakjesavond, falls on December 5; in Germany, Austria and much of Central Europe, Nikolaus fills polished boots on the night of December 5 to 6. Dutch settlers carried Sinterklaas to New Amsterdam, and in nineteenth-century America the figure gradually transformed into Santa Claus — making the modest bishop of Myra the ancestor of the world's most famous gift-bringer.

Meaning

At its heart, the Feast of St. Nicholas celebrates generosity given quietly, without expectation of thanks — the spirit of the saint who, in legend, gave his gifts at night and unseen. For Christian communities it is a saint's day within Advent, a moment to honour a pastor remembered for protecting children and helping those in need, and to let that example shape the weeks before Christmas. For families across Europe it is also one of the most tender rituals of early winter: the careful polishing of a boot, a carrot left for the saint's horse, the morning discovery of mandarins, chocolate and gingerbread. In many countries it keeps gift-giving for children pleasantly separate from Christmas itself, preserving December 25 as a quieter family feast — and it reminds everyone where Santa Claus originally came from.
