International Men's Day on November 19 highlights the wellbeing of men and boys, celebrates positive male role models, and encourages awareness of men's health. It is marked in more than 90 countries.

History

The idea of a day dedicated to men and boys took shape gradually toward the end of the twentieth century, with scattered attempts appearing in several countries during the early and mid-1990s. Most of these early efforts were short-lived. The observance in its familiar form dates to 1999, when Jerome Teelucksingh, a history lecturer at the University of the West Indies in Trinidad and Tobago, relaunched it and gave it a lasting structure. He chose November 19 in memory of his father's birthday, and because the date recalled an occasion when his country had come together in shared pride. Rather than build the day around a single cause, Teelucksingh framed it around a set of guiding objectives: promoting positive male role models, recognising the contributions men make to family and community, focusing on men's health and wellbeing, and encouraging better relations between people. He also placed the date deliberately, the day before Universal Children's Day on November 20, so that the two observances would form a natural pair linking the care of men with the care of the next generation. From these Caribbean beginnings the day spread steadily. It was adopted in a growing number of places through the 2000s, and by the 2010s it was marked in more than eighty nations across the Americas, Europe, Africa, Asia and Oceania. Its reach was helped by its overlap with November's wider men's-health campaigns and by the custom of choosing a fresh theme each year to give events around the world a shared focus.

International Men's Day offers a gentle, appreciative moment to recognise the fathers, sons, brothers, mentors, teachers and friends whose quiet support shapes everyday life. It invites reflection on the many roles men play within families and communities, and celebrates the care, patience and encouragement they offer to the people around them. For many who mark it, the day is above all a reminder to look after wellbeing — to speak openly about physical and mental health, to check in on one another, and to reach out when help is needed. Observed each year alongside campaigns that encourage men to attend to their health, it carries a warm, hopeful message: that valuing men and boys and caring for their wellbeing helps strengthen whole communities.
