Saint George was, by tradition, a soldier of Greek heritage serving in the Roman army who was martyred for his Christian faith around the year 303, and whose tomb at Lydda in the eastern Mediterranean became an early place of pilgrimage. His fame travelled widely through the medieval world, and the story most associated with him — the rescue of a princess from a dragon — reached its classic form in the thirteenth-century Golden Legend, turning George into the very image of the chivalrous knight. Remarkably, the saint who came to embody England never set foot there. English devotion to George grew steadily through the Middle Ages. The Synod of Oxford raised his feast to greater prominence in 1222, and in the fourteenth century King Edward III placed his new Order of the Garter — England's highest order of chivalry, founded around 1348 — under George's patronage. By the fifteenth century April 23 ranked among the great feasts of the English calendar, and George's red cross on a white field had become the flag of England, later incorporated into the Union Flag. Celebration of the day faded after the eighteenth century, but recent decades have brought a good-natured revival: civic parades, dragon pageants, Morris dancing and food festivals now mark April 23 in towns across England. The date carries a happy literary echo too — it is both the traditional birthday and the date of death of William Shakespeare, and UNESCO chose April 23 as World Book Day. Elsewhere, from Catalonia's Sant Jordi festival of books and roses to celebrations in Aragon, Portugal and Georgia, the same feast is kept with local colour.
