Singles' Day is widely traced to Nanjing University in China around 1993, where students are said to have coined "Guanggun Jie" — the Bachelors' Day or "Bare Sticks Holiday." The date of 11 November was chosen because the four ones in 11/11 resemble guanggun, a bare stick, which is Chinese slang for a person without a partner. The observance began as a playful counterpoint to couples' celebrations: an occasion for single students and young professionals to celebrate being unattached, socialise, host parties and treat themselves rather than lament their status. Through the 1990s and 2000s the custom spread among Chinese university campuses and cities largely by word of mouth. The day was transformed in 2009, when the Chinese e-commerce company Alibaba adopted 11 November as a one-day online sale on its Tmall platform, framing it as an occasion for singles to buy gifts for themselves. What started with a handful of participating merchants quickly snowballed. Sales rose from a modest figure in 2009 into the tens and then hundreds of billions of yuan, and Double 11 came to eclipse the American Black Friday and Cyber Monday combined as the biggest shopping day on the calendar. Rival platforms such as JD.com and later Pinduoduo launched their own competing campaigns, turning a single date into a season of pre-sales and promotions. Over the following decade the festival expanded well beyond a single 24-hour window. Retailers introduced weeks of advance deals, deposit-and-balance payment schemes, elaborate televised galas featuring international celebrities, and around-the-clock livestream shopping hosted by online influencers. The event also travelled beyond mainland China, adopted by retailers across Southeast Asia and marketed to shoppers worldwide, cementing 11 November as a global commercial phenomenon whose origins as a students' in-joke are now largely eclipsed by its scale.

Singles' Day carries a double identity that gives it much of its charm. In its original spirit it is a celebration of the unattached — a cheerful reminder that being single is worth marking in its own right, an antidote to holidays built around couples and a nudge to enjoy friendships, self-care and small indulgences.
