History

The name Raksha Bandhan joins two Sanskrit words — raksha, meaning protection, and bandhan, a bond or tie — and the festival's heart is an ancient idea: that a sacred thread can carry a wish for another's safety. Rituals of tying a protective amulet, or raksha, reach far back in Indian tradition, and the day falls on the full moon (Purnima) of the month of Shravana, usually in August. Early narratives gave the observance its enduring theme of loving protection. Several beloved stories are told at this season. In one, the river goddess Yamuna ties a thread to her brother Yama, the lord of death, who blesses her with lasting life. In another, drawn from the Mahabharata, Draupadi binds a strip of cloth around Krishna's wounded wrist, and he later returns her kindness with protection. Over the centuries the observance took clearer shape as a festival of siblings, coinciding in coastal regions with Nariyal Purnima and, among some communities, with the annual changing of the sacred thread. In Bengal the poet Rabindranath Tagore reimagined the tying of rakhis as a gesture of fellowship, encouraging people to bind threads to one another as a sign of shared humanity. Carried abroad by the Indian diaspora, Raksha Bandhan is now observed across the world. Modern customs have widened its circle: rakhis are posted to brothers living far away, the threads range from simple cotton to ornate designs, and many tie them for cousins, friends and chosen kin.
