Coffee's journey began long before any calendar marked it. By the fifteenth century the beans were being roasted and brewed around the Red Sea, and communities in Yemen prized the drink for the wakefulness it lent to long hours of study and devotion. From the port of Mocha, coffee travelled to Cairo and Constantinople, where the coffeehouse emerged as a lively centre of conversation, and by the seventeenth century it had reached Venice, London and cities across Europe. Out of this deep-rooted culture, national coffee days followed: the All Japan Coffee Association designated October 1 as Coffee Day in 1983, and the United States has marked an unofficial National Coffee Day on September 29 since the mid-2000s. The idea of a single, worldwide celebration took shape through the International Coffee Organization, an intergovernmental body founded in 1963 that brings together producing and consuming countries. At a meeting in March 2014 the members agreed to establish one common date, and on October 1, 2015 the first official International Coffee Day was launched at Expo Milan in Italy, marked that day in some 75 countries by the organization's count. October 1 is also the first day of the coffee year used in the organization's statistics. Since that debut the day has been embraced across dozens of countries, carried forward each year by cafes, roasters and coffee lovers. Annual themes have drawn attention to the people behind the cup and to the sustainability of the crop they tend. What began as scattered national observances has become a shared global moment.
