History
The feast has its roots in the Christian East, where a celebration of the Conception of Mary by her mother, Saint Anne, appears in Byzantine calendars by the seventh or eighth century, kept on December 9. The observance travelled to southern Italy and then to Anglo-Saxon England, where monasteries were honouring the Conception of the Virgin by the eleventh century; from England the feast spread back across Norman France and gradually into the wider Latin Church. Through the medieval centuries the feast grew alongside a long scholarly conversation about how best to describe Mary's conception, with the Franciscan theologian John Duns Scotus offering an influential explanation in the early fourteenth century. In 1476 Pope Sixtus IV formally approved the feast for the Roman calendar, and in 1708 Pope Clement XI extended it to the whole Latin Church as a day of precept. Its date, December 8, falls exactly nine months before September 8, the much older feast of the Nativity of Mary. On December 8, 1854, Pope Pius IX solemnly defined the Immaculate Conception as Catholic dogma in the document Ineffabilis Deus, and in 1857 the Column of the Immaculate Conception was raised beside the Spanish Steps in Rome, where a floral tribute is still offered each December 8. Spain, which had championed the Immaculate with particular fervour since the seventeenth century, took her as national patroness and keeps the day as a public holiday, while celebrations from Seville's centuries-old ceremonies to Nicaragua's joyful Griterรญa show how deeply the feast took root across the Catholic world.
Meaning
The Immaculate Conception expresses the Catholic belief that Mary was preserved from original sin from the very first moment of her existence, preparing her to become the mother of Jesus. A frequent point of confusion is worth clearing up: the feast celebrates the conception of Mary herself in the womb of her mother, Saint Anne โ not the conception of Jesus, which is commemorated at the Annunciation on March 25. Beyond its doctrinal meaning, December 8 has become a beloved threshold of the Christmas season. In Spain, Italy, Latin America and the Philippines it is the traditional day for lighting candles, setting up nativity scenes and beginning the festive weeks ahead, blending Marian devotion with themes of hope, purity and family gathering.
