The Cricket World Cup began in England in 1975, when the first tournament brought together the leading cricketing nations for a one-day international championship. Early editions were dominated by the powerhouses of the era, and the West Indies won the first two titles before a landmark 1983 victory by India helped transform the sport's popularity across South Asia. Over the following decades the tournament grew into one of the most watched events in world sport, travelling to hosts across Asia, Africa, Australasia and the Caribbean. Australia became its most successful team, while memorable triumphs by nations such as Sri Lanka in 1996 and England in 2019 added to its storied history. Organised by the International Cricket Council on a four-year cycle, the World Cup now commands enormous audiences, above all in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Australia and England. Recent editions have underlined the tournament's scale. Australia claimed a record sixth title in 2023, beating India in front of a crowd of more than 90,000 in Ahmedabad, in a tournament that drew some of the largest television audiences in the sport's history. The 2027 edition will bring the World Cup back to Africa for the first time since 2003, with South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia co-hosting an expanded 14-team field, before India and Bangladesh stage the 2031 finals.
