Grammy Awards Countdown

The Grammy Awards, presented each year by the Recording Academy, are the music industry's most prestigious honours, celebrating outstanding recordings, songs and artists across every genre. The televised ceremony — widely billed as music's biggest night — is usually held in Los Angeles in late January or early February.

History

The Grammy Awards grew out of an unlikely project: the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In the mid-1950s, recording executives asked to help select honourees realised that many of music's most important figures would never qualify for a star on the pavement, and resolved to create an award of their own. They founded the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences — today the Recording Academy — and on 4 May 1959 the first Gramophone Awards were presented at simultaneous banquets in Beverly Hills and New York. Twenty-eight categories were awarded that night, among them Record of the Year for Domenico Modugno's "Nel blu dipinto di blu (Volare)" and Album of the Year for Henry Mancini's music from Peter Gunn. The trophy itself, a gilded gramophone, gave the award its enduring nickname. Television transformed the Grammys from an industry dinner into a global spectacle. Highlights were first shown in taped "Best on Record" specials during the 1960s, and in 1971 the ceremony was broadcast live for the first time, hosted by Andy Williams. Over the following decades the show rotated among Los Angeles, New York and Nashville, and the category list expanded with music itself, adding fields for rock, rhythm and blues, rap, Latin, gospel, jazz and electronic music. Since 2000 the ceremony has made its principal home at the arena now called Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, with occasional departures such as Madison Square Garden in 2018 and Las Vegas in 2022. Today more than ninety categories are decided by the votes of Recording Academy members — the musicians, songwriters, producers and engineers who make records — with most awards presented at an afternoon Premiere Ceremony before the prime-time telecast crowns the marquee winners.

What sets the Grammy Awards apart is who does the choosing: winners are selected not by critics, sales charts or public polls, but by the votes of fellow music makers in the Recording Academy. A Grammy therefore represents peer recognition — the judgement of musicians, songwriters, producers and engineers that a piece of work stands among the year's finest. The four general-field awards, Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year and Best New Artist, are among the most coveted honours in popular culture.
