History

Good Friday grew out of the earliest Christian remembrance of the crucifixion of Jesus, which the first communities marked within an annual fast leading up to Easter. By the fourth century the day had acquired a distinct liturgy: the pilgrim Egeria, writing around 380, described worshippers in Jerusalem gathering to venerate what was believed to be a relic of the cross. The Council of Nicaea in 325 had already settled the timing of Easter, and Good Friday has fallen two days before it ever since. Over the following centuries the observance spread across the Christian world and its rites deepened. The Roman liturgy took shape as a solemn afternoon service of readings, prayers, the veneration of the cross, and Communion from bread consecrated the day before. The English name is old and slightly puzzling: 'Good' is generally understood in the archaic sense of 'holy' or 'pious,' and the term is recorded from around the thirteenth century. Medieval congregations kept the day in silence, stripping altars bare and leaving churches darkened. From the medieval period onward, Good Friday became woven into civic as well as religious life. Dramatic Passion processions developed in Spain and travelled to Latin America and the Philippines, where they remain among the most striking observances of the year. In Britain and its former territories the day became a statutory holiday, and customs such as eating hot cross buns took hold. After the Reformation, many Protestant churches kept the day with preaching and hymns rather than elaborate ceremony, giving Good Friday its many local forms today.

Meaning

For Christians, Good Friday is the most solemn day of the year — a time to contemplate the suffering and death of Jesus and the love that faith sees expressed in it. Fasting, silence, and the stripping of churches turn attention inward, and the mood is deliberately subdued. Yet the sorrow is never the whole story: the day is kept in the knowledge that Easter follows. The name captures this quiet paradox — a Friday called 'good' because believers hold its grief to be redemptive. Beyond the church, the day shapes the rhythm of family and community life in many countries, offering a pause from work, shared meals of fish or hot cross buns, and time for reflection. Whether observed through liturgy, procession, or simple stillness, Good Friday marks a threshold between mourning and hope.
