Eid al-Fitr, the Festival of Breaking the Fast, marks the end of Ramadan and is one of the two major festivals of Islam, celebrated with special prayers, feasting, new clothes and gifts.

History

Eid al-Fitr traces its beginnings to around 624 CE in the city of Medina, during the early years after the Prophet Muhammad's migration there. Islamic tradition holds that the Prophet established two annual festivals for the Muslim community, and Eid al-Fitr — the "Festival of Breaking the Fast" — was set to follow Ramadan, the month of daytime fasting. It falls on the first day of Shawwal, the tenth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, and its arrival has always depended on the sighting of the new crescent moon. From these earliest observances a recognizable shape of the day emerged and has endured for fourteen centuries. Before the festival prayer, worshippers give zakat al-fitr, a measure of food or its value, so that the poor may share in the day's joy. On Eid morning the community gathers for a special congregational prayer, frequently held on open ground and accompanied by the takbir — repeated phrases of praise. As Islam spread across Arabia, Persia, North Africa and further afield in the centuries that followed, these core elements travelled with it. As the festival reached new lands, it absorbed the foods, dress and customs of each region while keeping its shared heart. In South Asia it became known for sweet vermicelli and henna; in the Ottoman world for sugary pastries that gave rise to the Turkish name Şeker Bayramı, the "Sugar Feast"; in Southeast Asia for homecoming journeys and rice cakes. Today Eid al-Fitr is observed by well over a billion people and recognized as a public holiday across dozens of countries.

Meaning

For those who observe it, Eid al-Fitr is above all a day of gratitude. It rewards a month of self-discipline, dawn-to-sunset fasting, prayer and reflection with a celebration of renewal — a sense that the soul has been refreshed and the year begun anew. The obligatory charity given beforehand carries a message at the festival's core: that joy is incomplete unless it is shared, and that no member of the community should be left out of the feast. Eid is also a day of connection. Families reunite, often across great distances; neighbours exchange the greeting "Eid Mubarak"; and forgiveness, generosity and hospitality are extended freely. Children receive gifts and new clothes, homes fill with sweets, and the mood is one of warmth and communal thanksgiving that binds generations together and reaffirms the ties of kinship and friendship.
