Eid al-Adha, the Festival of Sacrifice, is often called the greater of the two Islamic festivals, commemorating the Prophet Ibrahim's devotion to God and coinciding with the culmination of the Hajj pilgrimage.

History

Eid al-Adha, the Festival of Sacrifice, draws its meaning from a narrative recounted in the Quran: the Prophet Ibrahim's readiness to sacrifice his son in submission to God, and God's merciful provision of a ram in the boy's place. Muslims mark the day on the tenth of Dhu al-Hijjah, the twelfth and final month of the Islamic lunar calendar. Historical accounts place its observance among the earliest practices of the Muslim community in Medina during the 7th century CE, when the two annual Eids were established. From its beginnings the festival was woven together with the Hajj, the pilgrimage to Mecca whose central rites reach their climax on this same date. Pilgrims gather at Mount Arafat on the ninth of Dhu al-Hijjah, and the following morning the wider Muslim world joins them in celebration. As Islam spread across Arabia, North Africa, Persia, South and Central Asia and beyond in the centuries that followed, local languages gave the day many names — Bakrid, Kurban Bayram, Tabaski — while its shared essence of prayer and sacrifice remained constant. Over time Eid al-Adha grew into a multi-day observance recognised on official calendars in dozens of nations, from West Africa to Southeast Asia. The custom of Qurbani — the sacrifice of a sheep, goat, cow or camel — endures, though modern practice increasingly channels it through licensed abattoirs and charitable organisations that distribute meat to families far from the celebration. For the growing Muslim diaspora, the festival has also become a moment that binds distant communities to a shared calendar and heritage.

Meaning

At its heart, Eid al-Adha is a celebration of devotion, gratitude and self-giving. The remembrance of Ibrahim's trust invites believers to reflect on obedience to God and on placing faith above personal attachment. The act of sacrifice is understood not as loss but as thanksgiving — a tangible reminder that blessings are meant to be shared rather than kept. The distribution of the sacrificial meat gives the festival its social spirit: it is traditionally divided in three, one part for the household, one for relatives and friends, and one for those in need, so that no one is left out of the feast. Days of congregational prayer, new clothes, family visits and generosity toward neighbours make Eid al-Adha a time of communal joy, reconciliation and care for the wider community.
