Durga Puja is the grandest festival of Bengal, a five-day celebration of the goddess Durga held in the bright half of the Hindu month of Ashwin, when cities such as Kolkata transform into open-air galleries of ornate pandals, drumbeats and feasting. Its main days, Shashthi through Vijaya Dashami, coincide with the close of Sharad Navratri and the day of Dussehra.
