Commonwealth Games Countdown

The Commonwealth Games are a major multi-sport event held every four years for athletes from Commonwealth nations and territories, affectionately known as the Friendly Games. The next edition takes place in Glasgow, Scotland, from 23 July to 2 August 2026.

History

The idea of a sporting festival uniting the nations of the Commonwealth was floated as early as 1891, when the English writer John Astley Cooper proposed a pan-Britannic gathering of athletes, and a trial run of sorts took place at the Festival of Empire in London in 1911. The vision became reality in 1930, when the Canadian sports journalist Melville "Bobby" Robinson organised the first British Empire Games in Hamilton, Ontario. Eleven countries sent around 400 athletes to compete in six sports — a modest start for an event that would grow into one of the world's great multi-sport occasions. The Games have been held every four years since, pausing only during the 1940s, and their name has evolved with the times: British Empire Games, then British Empire and Commonwealth Games from 1954, British Commonwealth Games from 1970, and simply the Commonwealth Games since 1978. From the beginning organisers wanted the event to be "merrier and less stern" than other international competitions, and the nickname the Friendly Games has stuck. The event also made history at Manchester 2002 by fully integrating para-sport events into the main programme, with para medals counting in the overall table — a first for a major multi-sport games. Recent editions have taken the Games from the Gold Coast in 2018 to Birmingham in 2022, where more than 70 Commonwealth nations and territories competed. Glasgow, host in 2014, stepped forward to stage a reimagined 2026 edition built around ten sports and four venues, running from 23 July to 2 August 2026. Looking ahead, the 2030 Games will mark the event's centenary, one hundred years after Hamilton 1930, with Ahmedabad in India named as host and exact dates still to be announced.

Meaning

The Commonwealth Games celebrate a simple idea: that sport can bind together a remarkably diverse family of nations and territories spread across every inhabited continent. Because England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland compete as separate teams, and small island territories march alongside populous nations, the Games give athletes and fans moments of pride that few other stages can offer. The nickname the Friendly Games captures their character — world-class competition carried out with warmth, respect and a strong sense of shared heritage. The Games have also led the way in inclusion. Since 2002 para-sport has been woven into the heart of the programme rather than held separately, so wheelchair racers, para swimmers and para cyclists share the same venues, sessions and medal table as their teammates. For host cities, the event brings new facilities, volunteering traditions and a lasting sporting legacy; for viewers, it offers a four-yearly festival of athletics, swimming, netball, bowls and more that feels both global and personal.
