How China celebrates
In mainland China the statutory break runs from New Year's Eve through the third day of the new year and is stretched with weekends and make-up workdays into a week or more. Families watch the CCTV Spring Festival Gala on New Year's Eve, temple fairs (miaohui) fill parks in Beijing and other northern cities, and dumplings are the traditional midnight dish in the north while the south favours niangao and tangyuan.
