Asian Games Countdown

The Asian Games are the world's second-largest multi-sport event after the Summer Olympics, gathering athletes from some 45 Asian nations and territories every four years. The 20th edition comes to Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, from 19 September to 4 October 2026.

History

The Asian Games grew out of an early twentieth-century idea that the peoples of Asia should meet regularly on the sporting field. A forerunner, the Far Eastern Championship Games, was first held in Manila in 1913 and ran for two decades before fading. After the Second World War the idea was revived on a continental scale: the Asian Games Federation was founded in 1949, and the first Asian Games opened in New Delhi in March 1951 with eleven nations, 489 athletes and six sports. India's prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru lent the movement its enduring motto, 'Ever Onward', and the emblem of a bright red rising sun. From Manila 1954 onward the Games settled into a four-year rhythm, moving among the continent's great cities — Tokyo in 1958, Jakarta in 1962, Bangkok on four occasions, Tehran, Seoul, Beijing, Busan, Doha and Guangzhou among them. In 1982 the newly formed Olympic Council of Asia took over stewardship of the event, professionalising its organisation and steadily widening the programme beyond the Olympic core to embrace sports rooted in Asian tradition, such as kabaddi, sepak takraw and wushu. The Games have kept growing ever since. Hangzhou hosted the 19th edition in 2023 with roughly 12,400 athletes — the largest multi-sport gathering ever staged, surpassing even the Summer Olympics in participants — and introduced esports as a medal event. Aichi-Nagoya 2026 marks Japan's third time hosting after Tokyo 1958 and Hiroshima 1994, with Doha set to follow in 2030 and Riyadh in 2034.

Meaning

For a continent that is home to well over half of humanity, the Asian Games are a recurring celebration of shared achievement. Every four years, athletes from around 45 nations and territories — from the largest countries on Earth to small island states — march together in the parade of delegations, compete under the rising-sun emblem and stand side by side at medal ceremonies. The motto 'Ever Onward' captures the event's spirit of constant striving and mutual respect. The Games also give Asia's own sporting heritage a global stage. Disciplines such as kabaddi, sepak takraw, wushu and dragon boat racing reach audiences of hundreds of millions alongside Olympic sports, while host cities from Nagoya to Doha use the occasion to welcome the continent and showcase new stadiums, transit and parks. For athletes, a continental gold ranks among the proudest prizes in sport; for spectators, the fortnight offers a joyful reminder of how much Asia's many cultures share.
