The winter solstice is the moment when the sun reaches its lowest point in the sky for the northern hemisphere, giving the year its shortest day and longest night. Because it is astronomical rather than fixed to the calendar, it falls on or about December 21 each year. Humans have tracked and honoured this turning point for thousands of years, and monuments such as Newgrange in Ireland and Stonehenge in England were built to align with the solstice sunrise or sunset. Around the world the solstice gathered rich traditions of light and renewal in the darkest days of the year. In East Asia the Dongzhi festival celebrates the return of longer days with warming food and family gatherings; in Persian culture the night of Yalda — the eve of the first day of the month of Dey — is spent awake with family over pomegranates, watermelon and the poems of Hafez to welcome the sun's rebirth; and older European Yule customs of fire and evergreens fed into later midwinter festivities. What unites them is a shared instinct: to mark the moment when darkness peaks and the light begins, slowly, to return. The precision of the ancient builders remains striking: at Newgrange a purpose-built opening above the entrance, the roof-box, channels the midwinter sunrise down the passage to the inner chamber, while Stonehenge frames the solstice sunset along its main axis. Strictly speaking, the solstice is an instant — the single moment of the sun's southernmost position — and the familiar date is simply the calendar day in which that moment falls, which is why it shifts between December 21 and 22. Two details often surprise people. The shortest day is not the day of the latest sunrise or earliest sunset: because the Earth's orbit is slightly elliptical and its axis tilted, the earliest sunset at mid-northern latitudes comes about two weeks before the solstice and the latest sunrise about two weeks after it. And the solstice is only 'winter' for half the planet — in the southern hemisphere December brings the summer solstice and the longest day, while the June solstice is midwinter there, marked by festivals such as Inti Raymi, the Inca festival of the sun staged each June in Cusco, Peru. In ancient Rome the days around the December solstice were given over to Saturnalia, a week of feasting and gift-giving, and later to the festival of Sol Invictus, the 'unconquered sun', on December 25.
