Summer Paralympic Games Countdown

The Summer Paralympic Games are the world's premier multi-sport event for athletes with disabilities, held every four years in the same host city as the Summer Olympics. The next edition takes place in Los Angeles on August 15–27, 2028.

History

The Paralympic movement began not in a stadium but on the grounds of a hospital. In 1944 the neurologist Sir Ludwig Guttmann opened a spinal-injuries centre at Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Buckinghamshire, England, and made sport central to his patients' rehabilitation. On 29 July 1948 — the very day the London Olympics opened — he staged an archery contest for sixteen wheelchair athletes on the hospital grounds. The Stoke Mandeville Games became an annual fixture, and when a Dutch team competed in 1952 the event turned international, planting the seed of a sporting movement that would grow alongside the Olympics. Rome hosted the first official Paralympic Games in 1960, welcoming around 400 athletes from 23 countries just weeks after the Olympic Games in the same city. Over the following decades the Games expanded far beyond wheelchair sport, adding athletes with visual impairments, amputations, cerebral palsy and other disabilities, and drawing ever larger delegations from every continent. Seoul 1988 restored the pattern of sharing the Olympic host city and venues, the International Paralympic Committee was founded in 1989, and a landmark 2001 agreement between the IPC and the International Olympic Committee guaranteed that every future host city would stage both Games. The modern Summer Paralympics rank among the world's largest sporting events. London 2012 played to packed stadiums and record broadcast audiences, Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 carried the movement further still — Paris opening its ceremony in the heart of the city at the Place de la Concorde — and some 4,400 athletes now contest more than 540 medal events. Los Angeles stages the Games on August 15–27, 2028, the first Summer Paralympics ever held in the city, with Brisbane to follow in 2032.

Meaning

The Summer Paralympics celebrate elite sport in its fullest sense: speed, strength, precision and tactical brilliance performed by athletes who have redefined what the human body can do. The Games are a championship in their own right, where world records fall, rivalries span decades and a hundredth of a second still separates gold from silver. Their wider meaning reaches beyond the field of play. Each edition shifts public perceptions of disability by showcasing ability rather than limitation, and host cities routinely improve accessibility in transport, venues and public spaces — changes that outlast the closing ceremony. The Paralympic motto, 'Spirit in Motion', and the three agitos of the movement's symbol capture its message: that determination and excellence belong to everyone, and that inclusion makes sport, and society, richer.
