How Thailand celebrates
The three days have their own names: Maha Songkran (April 13) closes the old year, Wan Nao (April 14) is the day between years, and Wan Thaloeng Sok (April 15) opens the new one. The Thai cabinet also designated April 13 as National Elderly Day and April 14 as National Family Day, reinforcing the festival's homecoming role. Chiang Mai's municipal programme has run for ten days or more in recent years, with the old city moat as the main splash zone.
