Ram Navami Countdown

Ram Navami is a Hindu festival celebrating the birth of Lord Rama, marked with readings of the Ramayana, temple worship and processions.

History

Ram Navami falls on the ninth day of the bright fortnight of the Hindu month of Chaitra, usually in March or April, and celebrates the birth of Rama, the seventh avatar of Vishnu and hero of the epic Ramayana. Rama's life story — his righteousness, his exile, and his victory over the demon king Ravana — has been told and retold across the subcontinent for millennia and shapes ideals of duty and virtue. The festival often falls at the close of a nine-day period of devotion (Chaitra Navratri). Temples dedicated to Rama, above all in his traditional birthplace of Ayodhya, become the focus of grand celebrations. Devotees read and recite the Ramayana, sing devotional songs, and carry images of Rama, Sita, Lakshmana and Hanuman in colourful processions through the streets.

Meaning

Ram Navami celebrates the ideals embodied in Rama's story — righteousness, honour, devotion to duty and the triumph of good over evil. For many it is a day to reflect on those values and to draw inspiration from a life held up as a model of virtue. It is also a day of shared devotion and community. The recitations, hymns and processions bring people together in a spirit of joy and reverence, renewing the bonds of faith and neighbourliness.
