In the 1980s and 1990s, advertisers and food and beverage brands adopted the holiday, transforming it into one of the most widely celebrated cultural festivals in the United States. Today cities such as Los Angeles, Denver, Chicago and Houston host some of the largest Cinco de Mayo festivals in the world, drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors. In Mexico the day remains primarily a regional observance centred on the state of Puebla, where schools, cultural institutions and neighbourhoods mark the anniversary with parades, dance performances and the city's celebrated cuisine. Contrary to a common misconception, Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico's Independence Day, which falls on September 16.
