Ascension Day, forty days after Easter, is the Christian feast commemorating the ascension of Jesus into heaven.

History

Ascension Day commemorates the moment, described in the New Testament, when the risen Jesus was taken up into heaven forty days after his resurrection. Because it depends on the date of Easter, it always falls on a Thursday, thirty-nine days after Easter Sunday. The feast is among the oldest in the Christian calendar, with celebrations recorded from at least the fourth century, when it became a distinct observance across the Church. For centuries Ascension Day has been a significant feast in Western and Eastern Christianity alike, and it remains a public holiday in many countries, particularly across Europe. Traditional customs grew up around it, from open-air processions and the blessing of fields to the old English practice of 'beating the bounds', in which parish boundaries were walked and marked. In some places the following Sunday leads toward the feast of Pentecost. The feast's antiquity is well attested: writing around the year 400, Augustine described it as observed throughout the Christian world and spoke of it as being of apostolic origin. In the fourth century it emerged as a celebration in its own right, distinct from Pentecost, with which the ascension had earlier been commemorated. Medieval churches marked the day with vivid ceremony — the Paschal candle lit at Easter was extinguished, and in some places a figure of Christ was hoisted up through an opening in the church roof as the congregation watched. In modern times a number of territories have transferred the feast to the following Sunday so that more of the faithful can take part, which is the origin of the name 'Ascension Sunday', while the traditional Thursday observance endures across much of Europe.

Meaning

Ascension Day carries themes of completion and hope. It marks the close of Jesus's earthly ministry and, for Christians, his exaltation — a moment understood not as an ending but as a transition that points toward the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. The feast also invites reflection on presence and mission. Falling in the fresh green of late spring across the northern hemisphere, it has long been a day for outdoor blessings and a sense of looking forward with confidence.
